Pathemari Movie Review

Pathemari Movie Review

Pathemari tells the story a common man who burned his whole life in Gulf. It is written directed and produced by Salim Ahamed.

Narayanan ( Mammootty) and Moideen ( Sreenivasan) are friends from a village in Kerala. Soon after the oil boom kicked in they boarded a freight vessel ( Pathemari) to reach Dubai. A journey inspired by survival instinct and desire to support the family. They start working as manual laborers. And remain so till the very end.

The movie is two linear narrations interlacing each other. One starts in 70s and another in 2015. Both merge together to form the climax. Narayanan start his life in Gulf and his whole family prospers on his sweat. His sisters and brother in laws are all looking up-to Narayanan for inspiration to financial support. Even after his marriage Narayanan’s life continues on the same momentum so does the movie.

Story of the movie is devoid of any suspense or conflicts and better be categorized as a documentary of the life of a Gulf Malayali than a feature film. Yet you wont be disappointed as the screenplay by the same guy compensates for that. Movie takes utmost care to give the feeling of decades through which the life of Narayanan moves forward ( yet fiber frame of Sreenarayana Guru’s pic in 1980s pop up more than once.)

Co actors like Jewel Mary, Siddique, Joy Mathew and Salim Kumar did really wonderful job along with Mammootty and Sreenivasan. Casting for the movie has to be praised as well as visuals produced by Madhu Ambatt and Vijay Shankar. Music from Gopi Sundar and Sounds by Rasool Pookkutty meets our expectations.

Even though it lacks suspense of any sort, Pathemari is a movie worth watching for its realistic story and crafty narration. Another movie worth watching from Mammootty.
