Kochadaiiyaan: Thy kingdom cometh!

Kochadaiiyaan: Thy kingdom cometh!

“Parthaya, engal naattin rada-gaja-thuraga-padadigalai!” And Rajinikanth has arrived, undoubtedly! Even though this signature Rajini dialogue breezed in a good while after the intermission, the crowd in the theatre roared in befitting response!

India’s first performance capture photorealistic film has finally hit the screens, not to mention that setting the release date seemed more periodic than the period drama! Speculations about Kochadaiiyaan was widespread, and it was almost endemic considering how everybody plunged in to give an opinion on the trailer. Rest assured, after being subjected to much trailer-criticisms and verbal diarrhoea, Kochadaiiyaan sure surprises!

Kochadaiiyaan rides on the back of a good story, set on a great pace by excellent cinematography (Rajiv Menon). Director Soundarya Rajinikanth and scriptwriter K.S. Ravikumar have weaved a period drama with all the required ingredients — vast beautiful kingdoms at war, kings on each others’ throats, deception, love, loyalty, ‘raja thanthiram’, and the poetics and politics of a mythical era. And what other setting justifies the display of so much chivalry, so many horses, ships and bulwarks, astounding combat sequences, and the rare trait of the royalty of emoting through extensive dance routines!
